Launched in February 2020, Handshake is an experimental blockchain protocol based on unspent transaction outputs (UTXO) that seeks to decentralize domain name ownership governance. Currently, website domains are mainly managed by a central authority, ICANN, a non-profit organization responsible for the management of domain suffixes such as .com and .net. The internet's security also relies on Certificate Authorities, private companies that verify and identify legitimate domains. Handshake aims to replace this centralized system with a decentralized naming protocol and Certificate Authority.
