How the CMC.io index is calculated
Half of the score is Bitcoin's 21-day RSI on daily candles. 30% is trading volume: today's volume against the 7-day average, from 0.5x (calm) to 2x (frenzy). 20% is the 24h price change, from −10% to +10%. 0–24 extreme fear, 25–46 fear, 47–54 neutral, 55–75 greed, 76–100 extreme greed — the alternative.me bands, so both indexes read on one scale. The history before hourly snapshots is the same formula applied to daily Bitcoin candles.
FAQ
What is the Fear & Greed Index?+
A single number from 0 to 100 that summarizes market sentiment. Low values mean investors are fearful, high values mean they are greedy.
Why are there two indexes?+
Ours reacts to Bitcoin's price action within the day; alternative.me is the most cited daily index and adds social and search data. They often agree on direction but can differ by several points — together they give a fuller picture.
How can I use it?+
Extreme fear has often come near local bottoms and extreme greed near local tops, so some traders treat them as contrarian signals. The change of the index over a day, a week or a month is as informative as its current value. This is not investment advice.
How far back does the history go?+
Both indexes are available from February 2018: alternative.me publishes its full history, and ours is rebuilt from daily Bitcoin candles.
