Why track Bitcoin dominance
Bitcoin usually sets the tone for the whole market. When its dominance rises, capital is concentrating in BTC — often a sign of caution or of an early bull phase. When it falls, money flows into altcoins, which historically happens in late bull markets (altcoin season).
FAQ
What is Bitcoin dominance?+
It is the percentage of the total crypto market capitalization that belongs to Bitcoin: Bitcoin market cap divided by the market cap of all tracked coins.
What makes Bitcoin dominance change?+
It rises when Bitcoin's market cap grows faster (or falls slower) than the rest of the market, and declines when altcoins outperform Bitcoin. New stablecoin issuance also lowers it, because it adds to the total market cap.
How is it related to altcoin season?+
A bull market usually starts with Bitcoin. Later, profits rotate into ETH and other coins and Bitcoin dominance falls — this rotation is called altcoin season. Compare with the Altcoin Season Index.
Why can the history have gaps?+
History before hourly snapshots is rebuilt from stored total market cap candles. Days where that total is missing or was distorted by data errors are left out rather than shown with wrong values.
