The development of ASIC devices for SHA-256 and Scrypt algorithms made mining on Bitcoin, Litecoin and their forks, working on the same algorithms, unprofitable. At the same time, there was a threat of centralization of the network around large data centers involved in the extraction of digital money on an industrial scale. The development of Vertcoin set its goal to eliminate the possibility of creating ASIC-devices for the extraction of cryptocurrency. This approach increases network decentralization and supports the mining of ordinary users. Creating the basis of Vertcoin was an improved version of the algorithm of Litecoin - Scrypt Adaptive N-Factor. Its distinctive feature was the increase in requirements for RAM by half. However, soon some manufacturers released ASIC for this version, which significantly reduced the value of VTC cryptocurrency. In early 2015, Vertcoin switched to the Lyra2RE algorithm. Its advantage is providing protection through parameters that are changed every few years, which makes the development of ASIC devices unprofitable. Also, the new algorithm reduces electricity consumption and heat the GPU.
