The "apu apustaja" phrase first appeared on Ylilauta in January 2016. Its popularity surged after a Facebook page was created on January 14th, 2016. An anonymous 4chan user introduced a "food help helper" Pepe variant on March 25th, immediately catching the attention of the /b/ board.
