Zcash is a digital currency that originated from the Zerocoin project, which aimed to enhance privacy for Bitcoin users. The Zerocoin protocol was later refined and evolved into Zerocash, resulting in the creation of Zcash in 2016. Zcash employs advanced cryptography called zk-SNARKs to encrypt the details of shielded transactions, ensuring the privacy of the sender, receiver, and transaction amount. Like Bitcoin, Zcash has a capped supply of 21 million coins. The company is led by CEO Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn, with cryptographer Matthew D. Green from Johns Hopkins University as part of the founding team. Investor Roger Ver was among Zcash's early backers.
