The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a decentralized, open, and scalable naming system built on the Ethereum blockchain. Its purpose is to translate human-friendly names like 'alice.eth' into machine-readable identifiers such as Ethereum addresses, other crypto addresses, content hashes, and metadata. ENS also enables reverse resolution, linking metadata like canonical names or interface descriptions to Ethereum addresses. Similar to DNS, ENS uses a hierarchical structure of dot-separated names called domains, with domain owners having complete control over their subdomains.
