Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency created by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a joke poking fun at cryptocurrency speculation, is considered the first "meme coin" and "dog coin." Despite its satirical origins, some view it as a viable investment. Dogecoin's logo features Kabosu, the Shiba Inu from the "doge" meme, which became popular in 2013. The meme includes a Shiba Inu image with broken English text in Comic Sans font. Introduced on December 6, 2013, Dogecoin quickly gained a community, reaching over US$85 billion in market capitalization on May 5, 2021. As of 2021, it sponsors Watford Football Club and uses scrypt technology in its proof-of-work algorithm, requiring more complex mining hardware.
