Proton VPN is a virtual private network service operated by Proton AG, a company based in Switzerland. The service was launched in 2017 as part of the Proton product family, which also includes Proton Mail and Proton Drive. Proton AG was founded in 2014 by former CERN scientists.
Proton VPN provides apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. Its features include a kill switch, split tunneling and Secure Core routing, which passes traffic through servers in selected countries before it reaches its destination. A free plan is available with limited server locations and connection speeds. The provider's no-logs policy has been independently audited. The service is aimed at individuals and organizations that want encrypted connections and greater online privacy.
The CMC Score combines public data — traffic, app ratings, security record, age, community and market size — with users' reviews. Missing data is skipped rather than counted as zero, and the less is known about a company, the closer its score stays to the middle of the scale.
