MetaMask is a self-custodial crypto wallet available as a browser extension and a mobile app. It allows users to hold and manage accounts on Ethereum and other EVM-compatible networks, and to connect to decentralized applications (dApps) through a web browser. Users control their own private keys and recovery phrase.
MetaMask is developed by ConsenSys, a software company founded in 2014 by Joseph Lubin. The wallet was first released in 2016. It supports sending and receiving tokens, viewing NFTs, and connecting hardware wallets. It is aimed at individuals who use Ethereum-based applications, as well as developers building on EVM networks.
The CMC Score combines public data — traffic, app ratings, security record, age, community and market size — with users' reviews. Missing data is skipped rather than counted as zero, and the less is known about a company, the closer its score stays to the middle of the scale.
